Clique Photo Club
Sydney Boys High School student Daniel Cai has won Student Clique's launch challenge for his image of school friends silhouetted by outside light in a hallway. Student members were asked to submit their best photo taken within 2016 that best captures the theme "Student Life".
Cai spoke with Student Clique about what drives his passion for photography and the story behind his image:
Tell me about this image, where was it taken and why did you decide to take it?
With exams over and plenty of free time, my friends had stayed back after class to kick a soccer ball around. I'm kind of known around the school as the guy who always has a camera with him and, of course, it was with me at the time. We were getting ready to go home now and they were walking ahead. The scene was picturesque: sunlight streaming into the darkened tunnel, and three boys, alike yet different, back lit against the peaceful scenery.
What is it about photography that you like so much?
To me, photography is all about capturing a moment and telling the story behind it. To paraphrase Ansel Adams, there are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer. Whether it is to immortalise a scene to relive later, or to express the feelings of a fleeting moment, the photograph is the medium through which photographers choose to tell these stories to others.
What got you started in photography?
Like many others, my start in photography was when I was handed an old camera and told to do whatever I wanted with it. For me, that was just holiday snaps to start with. Looking to two years ago, I really got stuck into photography when I got my first smartphone. This brilliant device let me have a camera with me at all times, plus a digital darkroom and social media all rolled into one. I could instantly share my photos, my stories, with everyone. I was instantly hooked.
What do you like about Student Clique?
As someone who has participated (and been a finalist) in previous Clique challenges, I think that Student Clique will be a wonderful opportunity for students of all ages and skill levels to showcase their work, where technique and creative thinking is valued, appreciated, and a source of constant inspiration. I also love the opportunities for exposure afforded to participants: bi-monthly challenges for students to do what they do best, photo competitions with the winner to be featured in publication, and the rare chance to get feedback from working professionals in the field.
Cai will take home an array of prizes, including a $500 Westfield gift voucher, a Nikon 50 prime lens, a $100 Momento Pro digital voucher, a PosterCandy print, and more!
